Winter clothes

Winter always makes me a little frustrated. I don't know what to wear, how not to catch a cold (and this year I already did!) and, well, how to live in general. This time of year is quite rough in Moscow: it is around 0° C, suns rises later than I leave home and goes down earlier than I come back and it feels like I'm an owl or someone else living in the night. Thankfully, I have some ideas about what to wear when it'll start snowing. I'm even a little bit excited about snow and it is quite unexpected for me!

Here are some clothes that, I believe, will be perfect for winter:

This amazing full skirt from Modcloth. Aren't this fans just a fabulous finish touch? I think it will look wonderful with pink, mustard wool cardigans with detachable peter pan collars or simple blue shirts.

Those (or any similar, in fact) 40s-50s style high-waisted trousers seems to be warm enough for winter, very comfy and you can wear it with pretty much anything! I like gray ones.

Any woolen skirts in mid-fifties style (am I right?) are great. In "Mona Lisa Smile" all the girls wore resembling skirts. I found a lot of pretty ones here and here on Etsy. I would probably wear it with ascot tie blouses like this and jackets.

I literally fell in love with this wonderful purple suit. It is perfect from head to toes. Color, fabric, style...I like everything about it!

What about you? Do you have any desirable clothes? Tell me everything!

  1. Okay, let me just tell you how excited I am that I've found your blog! I was born in Moscow and all of my family live there, and I was only in Moscow this past July! I plan on visiting my family in Moscow again soon, but I want to go in winter, so I have no idea what I would wear if I visited Moscow in winter! I live in Australia and don't even own winter clothing, so for the past few years I've only ever visited Russia in summer :P

So I'm going to be eagerly following your blog now for ideas about what to wear to Moscow if I go in winter, because I would prefer to wear vintage inspired outfits that look nice, rather than not to pretty practical clothes! So, so happy to have found your blog because I really miss Moscow and while I was there I didn't encounter anyone wearing vintage, so I am pretty curious :)

    1. Wow! That's so great!!

First of all, welcome, I'm so excited, this is the very first comment on my little blog and wow! Okay. So.

I'll try to write a big post about winter clothes in Moscow later, when it'll start snowing because it's a great problem for me: I really want to wear vintage and it's quite easy for indoor clothes but I feel like I will still wear puffer coat outside :( I'll try to think of something.

Do you speak russian, by the way? I'm thinking about going to Australia for my Master's degree :)

Thank for following! You have a great blog!

    2. Aren't we just a pair of great blogging minds, thinking about this topic within a couple of days of each other. Though I'm not comparing them to those of Russia per se, the winters here in Canada can get mighty cold (and very snowy!), too. Where I live now is in the province of British Columbia about five hours north of Vancouver. We get scorching hot (wonderful) summers and what I'd call (on a Canadian scale) as medium rough winters. Several years ago I lived in the city of Calgary in Alberta for a while, and the winters there were bone shatteringly cold. I'd often wait for the bus in the morning in -40C weather with snow up to my thighs. Certainly not the easiest weather to wear vintage clothes in, but I got by on those days by wearing modern long johns (long underwear) and or jeans under my skirts and dresses and just changing out of them once I got to work.

I love winter though, there's something kind of magical about the chill, the serenity that often comes with an evening snow fall, and the fact you get to curl up inside with a blanket and a cup of tea to help fend off the freezing weather.

Thank you very much for your lovely comment on my post today, dear gal, and let me be amongst the first to welcome you to the blogging world! :)

    3. Aww, thanks for your wonderful comment and welcome to my blog!

Right now it's about 0C or -3C around here so I wear a coat. In fact, normally the lowest temperature in Moscow is maybe -15C, not more, so I really hope it will be comfortable enough in thick coat and cashmere or wool sweater. I definitely need to do a post about some tricks I learned while trying to look beautiful in the winter!

Normally I'm not a huge fan of winter but this year I'm feeling very christmas-y (while the main holiday in Russia is a New Year). I listen to christmas-themed songs, I take christmas coffee in Starbucks and I have already decorated apartment while normally we do it in the beginning of december. I have a good feeling about the upcoming year!

  2. Yes I can't imagine it would be easy to stay warm in Moscow without a giant coat. When I used to live there (back in the 90s) I used to always wear a giant fur coat to stay warm! Maybe you could find a nice vintage fur coat for yourself? That is, if you don't have a problem with fur!

I do speak Russian well, but I can't write or read Russian! I left Russia when I was 6 to live in London, and then Australia, so I've never been to school in Russia. I highly recommend coming to do your Masters in Australia, I'm sure you'll love it!
Looking forward to your posts :)

    1. Well, to be honest, I try to avoid fur as much as possible but I definitely need to think about it. I want to try wearing only thick kinda demi-season coat with wool or cashmere sweaters and maybe it'll go. :)

You have such an interesting life-story! That's amazing! Right now I'm only on my first year of Bachelor (not sure if it's a right word) so we'll see but I hope I will visit Australia anyway, it seems to be such a great country. :)

  3. I love the little scallop-ish detail on the jacket of the last suit's collar and front flap...HOW. CUTE. Great color too.
